One half of this site is practically the maps, the budgets, and the “Is this neighborhood actually walkable?” details that make a trip work.
The other half is personal: the missed trains, the unexpected meals, the strangers who pointed us in the right direction.
We don’t believe those two things should live in separate places. A good guide is more honest when it admits what went wrong, and a good story is more useful when it tells you what something cost and how to get there.

How we work
The guides on Routes & Tales come from real experience and careful research, not recycled listicles. When we recommend a place, it’s because we’d send a friend there.
When something disappoints us, we say so. Travel advice ages quickly, so we revisit and update our most-used guides as things change on the ground.
A note on honesty
We’d rather be useful than impressive. That means telling you when a famous sight is overrated, when a “budget” destination really isn’t, and when the best plan is to skip the plan entirely.
The goal is simple: help you travel a little smarter and come home with better tales of your own.
